Esplanade Presents
The Far Side of the Moon
by Ex Machina (Canada)
Performed by Yves Jacques

“This is Lepage at his very best, showing his talent for forging unexpected connections and appealing simultaneously to hearts and minds.”
– The Guardian

“It is a remarkable play, performed by a truly remarkable actor. It is a sad, funny, astonishing, brilliant, interesting, thought-provoking and utterly energizing play.”
– The Australian

"A stunning theatrical work that makes the universe more understandable while also making it more mysterious. You can’t ask much more than from a work of art.”
– The Boston Globe

An international space race to the moon. An inevitable domestic reconciliation. A journey of pure theatrical magic.

Set against a backdrop of the race to the moon between the Americans and the Russians, The Far Side of the Moon casts its cosmic gaze on Philippe, a struggling introverted philosopher, and his younger brother André, a successful TV weatherman—an estranged pair drawn together, coming to grips with the death of their mother.

Internationally renowned Canadian theatre visionary Robert Lepage’s iconic The Far Side of the Moon premiered in Québec in 2000, and has since been presented in over 45 cities all around the world. Performed solo by the critically acclaimed Yves Jacques, Lepage’s master work of poignant storytelling is visually stunning and technically exquisite, an emotionally arresting exploration of both outer and inner space.

About Robert Lepage and Ex Machina
Robert Lepage is a Canadian playwright, actor, film director, and stage director, recognised as an evocative scenographer and a magical storyteller. His company Ex Machina, which he started in 1994, is known to be one of the world’s most innovative companies, approaching projects with investigative workshops and ensemble-led research.

Ex Machina’s creative team believes that the performing arts—dance, opera, music—should be mixed with recorded arts—filmmaking, video art and multimedia. It believes that there must be meetings between scientists and playwrights, set painters and architects, and between artists from Québec and the rest of the world. From these gatherings, it believes that new artistic forms will emerge.

Lepage has been acknowledged by Le Monde as “a maestro of today’s multimedia theatre”. He has also been described as “a transformational catalyst as Peter Brook” who “[creates] theatre for people who don’t like theatre”.

Esplanade Presents Jazz in July+ New Sounds in Afro-Cuban Jazz: Alfredo Rodríguez & Pedrito Martinez (Cuba)
Two powerhouse artists explore new sounds in Afro-Cuban Jazz.Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo RodrÍguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Alfredo’s 2012 release Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing. Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. A protégé of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing when he defected to the US in 2009, RodrÍguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro-Cuban and jazz roots. Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis.YouTube

Mosaic Music Series Chōwa - In Harmony by Rani Singam and Akira Ishii
The spirit of Chōwa is a Japanese concept that represents harmonious partnerships. It encapsulates the musical pairing of vocalist Rani Singam, known as Singapore’s first lady of jazz, and one of Japan’s foremost jazz pianists, Akira Ishii. The two first performed together in Tokyo in 2018, and what Rani found amazing was how they could communicate and express themselves through the music in spite of the differences in their languages—a testimony to the universality of jazz and its ability to break down diverse differences in culture and language. She found an inexplicable synergy with Akira Ishii’s sensitive and lyrical accompaniment.Fuelled by their mutual love for jazz and pop standards, Rani Singam and Akira Ishii perform two evenings of intimate piano and voice duets. da:ns festival 2019 Grand Finale Hofesh Shechter Company (UK)
Nominated for an Olivier Award 2018 for Best New Dance Production and for Outstanding Production in the Bessies 2018. Won a 2019 Dora Award for Outstanding Touring Performance and nominated for Best Dance Production in the 2019 Helpmann Awards.Internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s latest work for Hofesh Shechter Company, Grand Finale, is a spectacularly bold and ambitious piece featuring 10 dancers and a live band of musicians. This work makes its Asian premiere in Singapore, with the company’s first appearance here since 2010. Grand Finale is at once comic, bleak and beautiful, evoking a world at odds with itself, full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. Filtering this irrepressible spirit, Shechter creates a vision of a world in freefall—part gig, part dance, part theatre, and wholly original. It would be impossible to miss the fact that Grand Finale reflects the uncertainty and confusion of the troubled times we are living in. Shechter captures a sense of helplessness and a macabre mood of crisis, but also the regenerative promise of chaos. The 10 dancers are a vision of a post-apocalyptic society. They pulse through kaleidoscopic formations as one body, one tribe, separating briefly for moments of fervent celebration, individual anguish, tenderness, and rag-doll collapse. This portrait of the struggle of the human spirit against apocalypse is intensely cathartic. Shechter leads us ultimately past despair to euphoric release, and a collective sense of having undertaken a monumental journey together.Shechter is recognised as one of the most exciting artists working today, renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores to complement the unique physicality of his movement. Based in the UK, but playing on major stages throughout the world, Hofesh Shechter Company is a boundary-breaking dance company that produces exceptional work created by Hofesh Shechter, with at their core a diverse tribe of extraordinary international dancers.Produced by Hofesh Shechter Company and commissioned by Georgia Rosengarten.Hofesh Shechter Company’s Commissioning Partners are Sadler's Wells, Théâtre de la Ville-Paris / La Villette-Paris and Brighton Dome and Festival. Raga In Your Shadow by Sandhya Suresh & Karishma Nair
In this restaging, two emerging dance choreographers present their original choreographies, bringing to light the invisible standards and responsibilities that women bear, through a dialogue between poetic narrative and contemporary movement. With dramaturgy by Beto Ruiz, original music by Bani Haykal and choreography mentorship by Raka Maitra. The Last Walk for Water.by Karishma NairWhat makes a young girl choose death over facing her family after losing a day’s water? The Last Walk for Water stages the true and tragic final moments of Letikiros Hailu, a young Ethiopian girl who, like most women and girls in the region of East Africa, spend eight hours a day waiting and walking for water. On one fateful day, she slips, falls and breaks her full pot of water. More than eight hours of walking and waiting are undone through a single misstep. Instead of going home, Letikiros takes that same rope that held the clay pot to her back, ties a noose around her neck, climbs a tree and hangs herself. The Last Walk for Water explores the state of mind of this young girl as she watched the water spill out on the dusty ground. The unfortunate circumstance of her birthplace, gender and the increasing effects of climate change put her in a position that made her value a single pot of water over her own life, at the age of 13.This work is a response to the ever growing risks and effects of global warming and the lives that are most deeply affected by it, and is inspired by The Last Walk for Water by Scott Harrison, Founder of charity:waterMan. Untold.by Sandhya SureshWhere does the need to be feminine come from, and why is it defined as such? It would seem that a woman’s strength lies in her ability to internalise—to withstand wrongdoing, absorb anger, and endure pain. Though it cannot be denied that women have become increasingly vocal and outspoken about equality, there is still a pervasive need for women to define themselves by the same standards of femininity. When a woman shows aggression or uses a commanding voice, she is derided for her masculine qualities. Since external assertions of strength are denied to her, is internal strength the only kind allowed for a woman? A woman takes care of her beauty. She watches her figure. She smiles at strangers. As if she is not yet a person of substance, but instead someone constantly performing as a perfect woman, waiting to be discovered.

Mosaic Music Series Andrew Lim Trio featuring Ben Paterson & Aaron James Lee
Guitarist Andrew Lim first met pianist Ben Paterson in a particularly disappointing jazz jam in New York City six years ago. Looking at each other in the subway, the two strangers shook their heads in lamentation. Both shared a love for jazz that was rooted in the soulful poignancy of the blues and old school swing, which was getting rare even in New York City. That became the start of a musical friendship that developed during the years Andrew spent in New York, and continues in this one-night-only concert in Singapore. This is part of a three-stop regional tour, and joining them on the drums is Aaron James Lee.

“Death Cab for Cutie get reborn with Thank You For Today”– Rolling Stone“Comforting alt-rock melancholia”– The Guardian“For a band in its third decade…Death Cab hasn't lost its gift for pairing Gibbard's soft ruminations with propulsive arrangements that know just when to sparkle and sway.– NPR MusicHold on to your hearts. After more than a decade, Grammy-nominated indie rock darlings Death Cab for Cutie return to Esplanade for a one-night-only concert, performing familiar favourites and hits from their latest album Thank You For Today.Thank You for Today is the sound of Death Cab for Cutie both expanding and refining; a band 20 years into its evolution, still uncovering new curves in its signatures, new sonic corners to explore. Beautiful and dynamic, and darkly anthemic and bittersweet, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard weaves a thread throughout about how interconnected geography is with memory, and how hard it can be to hold onto places, and to people too.Rising from a side project and becoming one of the most exciting groups to emerge from the indie rock scene in the 2000s, the band has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including for Best Rock Album for their 2015 album Kintsugi.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/6agCM9GJcebduMddgFmgsOGold Rush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTPZWG5eLf8I Will Follow You Into the Dark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoR0mGq_z2I
