DBS Gallery presents Siapa Nama Kamu?:  Art in Singapore since the 19th Century
"Siapa Nama Kamu?" means "What is your name?" The inaugural exhibition of the DBS Singapore Gallery poses this question, inviting visitors to consider how art may relate to issues of self and community, and what it means to look at Singapore through its art.
Drawing on close to 400 works, it explores the influences and practices that have shaped and transformed Singapore art. Each artwork provides insights into why and how an artist responded to his surroundings and circumstances. Taken as a whole, the wide range of artworks reflects the complexities involved in telling this extensive story.

Between Declarations and Dreams looks at Southeast Asian art’s continuous encounter with the new, and how artists negotiated meaning and expression as they grappled with change. A powerful exhibition, it displays close to 400 artworks, as well as rare books and artefacts.

With a rich history within itself, the Royal Albatross will prove to have something of interest for everyone, whether it is for the shutterbugs, the alcohol enthusiast, or the sailing hobbyists and travellers alike.

Starting off her journey in Chicago as Windy II, her crew undertook a monumental task of transforming to create a harmonious marriage between the traditional golden age of sailing and the modern technological advances, while maintaining her lode world charm and grace. Master rigger, Jim Barry, best known for his work on the ships featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, redesigned her 22 sail rig that is operated by over 200 ropes, each having a special place on their pin rail around the deck.

With less than 100 working tall ship left in the world, the Royal Albatross has the sole distinction of being made for opulence and enjoyment. ROYAL ALBATROSS MAST CLIMB

Experience one of the more challenging aspects of a sailor's life and climb the mast 21 metres above the decks of the Royal Albatross. Be it to prepare the sails or to do repairs; mast climbing has been an essential part of tall ship sailing since time immemorial. Sailors would also clamber up to the crow’s nest to watch for land or other ships or approaching storms.
This traditional tall ship boasts four masts that tower high above the waters of Sentosa. They support 22 sails all manually operated by 200+ ropes, just like they were from a bygone era. The Mast Climb is suitable for adults and children over 7 years old that are physically fit and looking to do something excitingly different! Great for that once-in-a-lifetime video/photo on top of a historic tall ship, an exhilarating activity for you at Resorts World Sentosa.

How these seamen used to do it in the olden days is using a harness or a bosun's chair together with a halyard and a winch to be hoisted up to the top. The other way is to secure themselves with a harness and climb up the sailing rig to reach the masthead.

Before ascenders came into the picture for traditional climbing, the ship's crew would have to tie friction knots for the same function of securing them. How friction knots work is that they allow the climber to ascend as long as the rope is slack. However, when pressure is applied, by pulling or if the climber falls, the knot will tighten and stop the climber from falling all the way through.

Nowadays, technology allows for motorised winches that could even allow for a solo climb, without the need to rely on a belayer.

For Royal Albatross, there is an industry attachment for students from the Institute of Technical Education to learn the ropes (literally) in being part of the crew on a tall ship. Part of this course includes learning the different aspects of the vessel and learning how to raise which sails and when.

Now, visitors to Sentosa get to take up this challenge to reach greater heights and reach 21 metres above sea level as they look upon the view beneath them. A reward for conquering a different trial unlike any other in the region.

If you are an explorer looking for adventure, a thrill-seeker, or maybe someone seeking to overcome their fear of heights, this is the activity for you waiting at Resorts World Sentosa.

ACM - Angkor: Exploring Cambodia's Sacred City

The civilisation of Angkor left an artistic legacy that lives on most spectacularly in its architecture and sculpture. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the archaeological complexes are today acknowledged as great masterpieces. But until the late 19th century, they were virtually unknown to the outside world. In this ACM exhibition, Angkor: Exploring Cambodia's Sacred City, visitors will see rare Khmer sculptures, along with French drawings, photographs, and memorabilia that tell the story of the French encounter with Angkor and its sensational emergence onto the international stage. The Asian Civilisations Museum presents this exhibition with the Guimet Museum in Paris. To accompany the exhibition, ACM has scheduled an array of programmes and talks related to Angkor and contemporary Cambodian culture, including our Angkor Encore Festival (25–27 May) highlighting Cambodian performing arts.

Amek Gambar (Taking Pictures) - Peranakans and Photography

The invention of photography in 1839 led to a revolutionary way of understanding and seeing the world. By 1841 the technology had arrived in Singapore, and gradually spread throughout Southeast Asia. The Peranakan community was among the earliest resident groups to be photographed. The first images of babas and nyonyas that survive were taken in about 1857. Peranakans were quick to exploit the potential of the new visual form. From ritual spaces to personal albums, from intimate lockets to social media, the presence of the photographic image in Peranakan cultural life in the last 160 years reveals the typically diverse ways an old community has grappled with this visual medium in expressing identity, tradition, locality, modernity, nationality, and art. The exhibition includes studio and amateur photographs of Peranakans across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar. In celebration of a donation by Mr and Mrs Lee Kip Lee of more than 2,500 photographs to the Peranakan Museum, this exhibition explores the multifaceted role of photography in the lives of Peranakans.

The Aurora, Mother Nature’s very own celestial light show, has fascinated mankind for centuries. And for some travellers and stargazers, viewing auroras is one of the most highly desired experiences in life.
From the comfort of your theatre seat, journey to frigid Yellowknife, Canada, to join fellow travellers awaiting the elusive appearance of these beautiful dancing lights. ¬Learn about the science behind auroras - aurora borealis (the Northern Lights) and the aurora australis (the Southern Lights); about auroral colours, substorm, mythology and more!
Enjoy the fascinating and ethereal visual display of real-time images of auroras filmed with ultra-high sensitivity cameras. Come witness the beauty and grandeur of auroras!
Note:
- The movie includes a 10-min planetarium show “Waiting Far Away”, a showcase of astronomy art animations which mixes imagination and real data. It also features a scene with animated auroras.
